Hugo Frederick has been bubbling under the surface of Melbourne's incredibly strong electronic scene for years; his debut EP, Skin, soars in on an intricate combination of whirling ambient undercurrents and classic '90s house pianos. Skin is a textural piece tied together with classic keys and the introduction of a fierce kick drum halfway through. Remote draws the listener back in with a more subdued affair, enticing with wondering synths and inclusive vocals and culminating in a perfect release. The hypnotic Stripped and the shuffling Hexagonia prove that Frederick can shift his focus away from 4/4 rhythms while maintaining the intuitive groove.
